I'm on YouTube!
Let’s face it …. social media is here to stay! I’ll admit it, I was slow to get on board. I dipped my toe in with Twitter at first, while I was the news producer for Canada AM. I would use it to promote segments on the show, tweet breaking news and share stories related to the Black community. Once I left CTV to start my own media consulting business, I hopped on LinkedIn on the advice of my career coach and started building a network on that platform of like-minded entrepreneurs and professionals. However, it took me a little longer to warm up to Instagram.
At the time, it was a very photo-focused platform and I didn’t get how that could help my business. But I was told that everyone is on the ‘gram’ and I was missing out on an audience that could benefit from my services as well as marketing/promotional opportunities. After taking an IG workshop at my business advisory centre, I understood the type of content I could post to boost my business and now Instagram is my main platform for my social media…until now.
It was during one of my Inspire Livestream interviews with content marketing consultant Jasmine Williams that we were discussing the most popular social media platforms out there. Jasmine pointed out that a lot of people overlook Youtube and don’t even consider it social media. One thing that she said that also got my attention is that the content lives on the site until you delete it and accumulates views for years. YouTube has consistently been ranked as the number one or two most-viewed platform since its inception in 2005. I started to give it some serious thought and talked it over with my assistant Adanna, who is a huge YouTube consumer. She concurred with what Jasmine said, and added her own insights on how a channel could be good for FKB Media. And so the channel was born!
So far, I’ve posted three videos with a new one coming. Of course the first one has the most views as with any new venture. People want to see what it’s about, plus your inner circle (mom and all her friends she sends the video to) want to support you. The reviews have been great and I’m encouraged to continue making the videos. This is more for me than views and subscribers. My value proposition is: making media accessible. As much as I would like to help everyone, I physically can’t. But what I can do, is give them the benefit of my experience and simple tips that they can do to meet their media goals. This advice comes from 20 years plus as a news producer for major market television stations and as a morning show producer. I have also written and edited for a variety of publications. This is free information that includes downloadable worksheets! Head to fkbmedia.com/dlc and put in the password YouTube to access them.
This YouTube journey is an interesting one for me. It’s taking me out of my comfort zone - from behind the camera to in front of it lol. But change doesn’t happen without discomfort. Take a look at my videos - I would love your feedback. I even have a new tagline that I’m going to end this blog with as well: Be well, work with purpose and I’ll see you next time.
