No Gym, Working at Home – Kym Niles has Family Fitness Fun

Fitness Expert Kym Niles with simple exercises for mobility and mental health

March 18, 2020 (Toronto,ON) –  With most gyms in the GTA shutting down services during the COVID-19 quarantine, Certified Personal Trainer Kym Niles has been fielding calls for help with an at-home fitness routine. “With the announcement of the March Break extension, I started getting calls about what kind of activities families can do to keep the kids occupied and release that pent up energy,” said Niles, who is also the founder of the Selflove Youth Wellness and Empowerment program. “Then when gyms started closing, it was non-stop messages of ‘help, what can I do at home to maintain the same gym impact’ and keeping in mind most of it has to be done inside a house or apartment.” Niles immediately started posting 45 second exercises on Instagram to her 12K followers. Here are some of her tips and a sample of what she can demonstrate or explain:

  • Mobility Exercises/ Stretches - as the days cooped up inside continue, stress/ anxiety is increasing – people need to loosen them up

  • High Intensity "HIIT' workouts break a sweat and are done in short spurts of 15 minutes

  • Making it a family event by incorporating exercises that kids can easily do like bear crawls, jumping jacks, partner plank touches and cartwheels

  • Mental Health is just as important – have conversations on flattening the curve and how we can all do our part in building Healthy Habits

  • We are in ‘fight or flight’ mode, which is spiking our cortisol, which spikes our insulin and leads to a bulging waistline; relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, positive imaging can calm fears and the mind
