Keynote Speaker Dr. Onye Nnorom - 2022 100 ABC Woman Honouree
For Immediate Release
September 23, 2022 (Toronto, ON) - The 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women (100ABCWomen) Organization is holding their virtual symposium on Saturday, September 24, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST. This year, the symposium will focus on Women Taking Control and Investing in Black Healthcare. “Our symposiums are about helping and informing women on various topics, from healthcare and technology to Black history, entrepreneurship, and more,” explains Dauna Jones-Simmonds, Co-Founder of 100ABCWomen. “The symposium was created to teach the next generation and amplify the voices of Black Canadian women.”
This year’s keynote speaker is a family doctor, public health specialist, and 2022 honouree Dr. Onye Nnorom, who has an intensive background in healthcare, specializing in Black Canadian health. She is the associate program director and the Black health theme lead at the University of Toronto. She is also a clinical Consultant for the Nicotine Dependence clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Among her many accomplishments over the years, Dr. Nnorom launched a podcast titled Race, Health and Happiness. She interviews successful marginalized people of colour to provide insight on ways to stay healthy in a racialized world. In 2021, she co-founded the Black Health Education Collaborative. The intent is to develop Black health educational content to teach students and health professionals about the harms of anti-Black racism in healthcare.
The virtual symposium comes a week after the prestigious 100 ABC Women gala and recognition ceremony presented by TD Bank Group. The gala and book acknowledges the accomplishments of Black women in Canada who come from all walks of life. The biennial book launch, which is co-authored by the Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, Dr. Denise O'Neil Green, and Dauna Jones-Simmonds documents the social, educational, political and professional achievements of the 100 honourees. With over 800 people in attendance, the gala was a great success!
About 100ABCWomen:
100ABCWomen’s goal is to inspire Black girls and women by shining a light on the many contributions Black women have made and continue to make in Canadian society. In addition, 100ABCWomen is building its database that currently houses the profiles of 400 talented Black women for future generations to easily access and know all of their Canadian history.
According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, “Black women face greater barriers to getting jobs, well-paid jobs in particular, compared to other racialized and white women. They are over-represented in precarious and part-time employment which typically pays less and provides fewer hours of work overall.
They experience long and frequent periods of unemployment, slower career advancement and more ‘long term’ entry-level positions.”
