The Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine Celebrates Her 87th Birthday With the Film Screening of a Trinidadian Icon and A Tribute to a Canadian Music Legend

Eddie Bullen to be honoured at the CaribbeanTales Film Festival
August 28th, 2024 (Toronto,ON) - The 19th annual CaribbeanTales International Film Festival (CTFF) is pleased to host the 87th birthday celebration of the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine at Harbourfront Centre Theatre, 231 Queens Quay West on Saturday September 7, 2024, doors open at 7pm, event starts at 7:30pm. “This is the third year that we are hosting this celebratory night for Dr. Augustine who is a national treasure,” exclaimed Festival Director Diana Webley. “We take this opportunity to showcase and honour those from the Caribbean diaspora who have risen to the same level of excellence in their chosen industry as the Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine - the first Black Canadian woman Member of Parliament.” As part of this year’s CTFF line-up, Iconography: Mungal Patasar (Directed by Mikhail Gibbings and Teneka Mohammed) is the feature film of the night. The Indo-Trinidadian musician is world renowned for his East meets West fusion of India’s traditional sitar and Trinidad’s national instrument, the steelpan. Mungal Patasar, who lives in Trinidad, will be in Toronto for the screening. He will be accompanied by his pannist Professor Harold Headly for a special performance.
The 2nd annual presentation of the Jean Augustine Excellence Award will also be a part of the night’s festivities. This year’s recipient is pianist, composer, arranger and producer Eddie Bullen. Since arriving in Toronto in 1980 from Grenada, Bullen has worked with Caribbean, Canadian and American artists such as Byron Lee, Maestro, David Rudder, Liberty Silver and Deborah Cox. He is a composer and arranger for TV, radio and films along with producing over 200 albums. Two-time Juno nominee, reggae, pop, soul and jazz artist Belinda Brady (who is also Eddie’s wife) will be performing a tribute to her husband.
Following the screening and award presentation, there will be a reception and toast for Dr. Augustine to celebrate her legacy. This night is a fundraiser for CaribbeanTales, a platform dedicated to uplifting Caribbean and African diaspora stories through film.
