Selling The Big Picture Story To The Media

The Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce (CBCC) launched with much fanfare last Thursday. Toronto's Metro Hall was full of businesspeople, community stakeholders, politicians and general observers who were curious about this new organization and why it is needed. How do you reduce this story into a minute and 30 seconds (TV) or a quick read web article. Often times I am tasked with reducing the "big picture" for media into the basic question we all have: "how does this effect me?" Make the story relevant and humanize it so it is relatable. The key is to have a good "character" with a story pitch that can appeal to most anyone or a person that garners empathy or some other emotion. Lola Adeyemi, CBAP, ITIL runs her own soup company. It's fairly new and she is already having some success. I won't reveal her whole story - you'll have to read the CBC article here. But what I will say is that she illustrated why an organization like the CBCC is needed and how it can help entrepreneurs like herself. Remember: Big Picture + Personal Anecdote (Strong Character)= Relatable Media Story
